PR Career Q&A with Laura Gallagher (Fluorescent PR)

April means two things for students: a long break mired by a mountain of revision and an underlying career panic as another year at University has slipped by. Third years in particular will be feeling this pressure as their precious University days are numbered and the need to find and secure a job is imminent.
The Life&Style team has previously attended many different careers talks and events in the hope of doing the perfect career searching legwork for you. Lara Edwards in March visited the Natural History Museum to attend a PRCA careers talk http://redbrick.me/41117 in order to uncover some truths about the reality of a career in PR versus the ‘dream job’ aesthetic given off through TV shows such as Absolutely Fabulous and media projections of air kissing and champagne press launches.
In these deep depths of revision, with a mounting pressure to choose let alone find a job, a career in PR appears, without a doubt, like a haven.
We have therefore sought the help of PR guru Laura Gallagher from Fluorescent PR to help us set the record straight and offer her top tips for getting into the industry:
How did you get into PR?
I first got into PR by sheer fluke when I was 17. I arrived at Premier Model Management to intern for 2 weeks and ended up assisting the PR Director. She later on went to set up her own PR Company and I joined her.
What are the best aspects of your job?
I love the variety in my job. I think its what keeps it interesting. One day I will be in Birmingham launching a new Boux Avenue lingerie store, the next shooting a look book for Jarlo London and then just spending time in the office talking to journalists and selling in stories.
What are the worst aspects?
The hours. Don’t be fooled, this is no 9-5 job.
Is it anything like TV show ‘Absolutely Fabulous’?!
There are still some big characters in the fashion industry but generally no it’s not like Ab Fab. PR is rewarding but its hard work, it’s not all champagne sipping and free samples.
What has been your career highlight so far?
For me highlights happen every week when projects you are working on start to appear in the press and people start to talk about them. My most memorable ones are the launch of Per Una due at M&S, working on the Comic Relief campaign with the music legend Bryan Adams and the party to launch lingerie brand Boux Avenue at Sketch.
Describe a day in the life of your job…
They vary so much but generally I arrive in the office around 9am. First things first a cup of coffee! My day then entails dealing with requests from press and clients, press release writing, brain storming ideas for clients, checking newspapers and magazines for coverage, arranging go-sees with photographers and models.
What advice do you have for people looking to work in PR?
Gain as much experience as you can, its invaluable. Be gracious even if you are being asked to complete menial tasks, we all have to do it!
