Olympic hopes brighten for Birmingham’s best
With London 2012 places up for grabs, many current and former UoB students went to the Alexandra Staidum looking to cement their position at the Games...
This week saw Birmingham’s athletes striving to qualify for the once in a lifetime chance of performing at the London 2012 Olympics. Overall last weekend, Birmingham had a total of 23 students and 18 alumni who had achieved the entry standards to take part in the Olympic trials at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.
Arguably the best event from the University’s perspective was the 3000m Steeplechase where alumni Luke Gunn and James Wilkinson came first and second respectively. They will now prepare for the European Championships in Helsinki with great confidence of achieving the Olympic qualifying standard.
In the women’s race, we had four current students taking part, again producing encouraging results. Pippa Woolven came in 5th, followed by Iona Lake and Laura Riches in 9th and 11th places, both achieving personal bests. Pippa will now prepare for the World Junior Athletics Championships in Barcelona, taking place from 10th-15th July. Also, Laura will now look forward to the European Mountain Running Championships on the 17th July in Turkey, having been selected on the back of impressive performances.
The 1500m also harboured good results for Birmingham with current students Harry Harper and Dan Clorley making the final where Harry finished in 6th position. In the final of the women’s race alumna Hannah Brooks also finished in 6th place.
Other students made the finals of their respective events: Rebecca Linney competed in the 800m final and alumna Sineade Gutzmore came in fourth in the triple jump. Louise Hazel finished fourth in the 100m hurdles and will now, like Gunn and Wilkinson, be representing Great Britain at the European Championships this week.
