Redbrick is always looking for new people for a wide selection of roles. Be it a photographer, writer, editorial assistant, editor, web designer, online editorial assistant, or even an app builder. Anybody who is a student at the University of Birmingham can join, taking the opportunity to build a portfolio and enter the world of journalism through one of the country’s leading student papers.
Joining Redbrick provides you with the chance to get your name on our website which receives over 5,000 unique visitors every week from around the world, and into print for a newspaper with a distribution of 3,000. Many of the writers for Redbrick have gone on to excel in the world of journalism with alumni working at the Telegraph, Guardian, Times, and BBC.
In November, Redbrick won the award for Website of the Year in the Guardian Student Media Awards as well as being listed as publication of the month for August by Ones to Watch.
Our available roles, and section meeting times are at the bottom of the page. If you want to write for us the best thing you can do is turn up to a section meeting.
Available Roles
General member roles ALWAYS available (interview not required):
- Writer- We are always looking for new writers for online and print. Simply turn up to one of the section meetings listed below where you can suggest ideas for articles, meet other writers and talk to the section editors. It is at the section meetings that articles are distributed to writers. (It is not required to email join@redbrickonline.co.uk to apply for this position)
- Photographer- Redbrick is always looking for photographs for both print or online. From Sport photography, images for News and each of the other sections, there are plenty of opportunities to put your skills with the camera to use. Also, have a look at opportunities at PhotoSoc. (It is not required to email join@redbrickonline.co.uk to apply for this position

Section Meeting Times
Section meetings are effectively brainstorming sessions for articles in the following week’s print and online. Turning up to these is the best way to get your name in the paper through submitting articles or photographs. Email addresses are included here if you have further questions or can’t make the meetings. Student Development is on the ground floor of the Guild, by reception. The common room is also in the Guild, directly above Subway.
